The Trials of Rosalinda
Hints and Walkthrough

General advice

- Different characters and body parts can interact with the environment in different ways. If you think an object may be useful, but can't interact with it, try switching to a different character/body part. In addition, some areas in the game are accessible only to certain characters. Also, remember Rosalinda can't talk to anyone without her skull!
- You can pick up Rosalinda's arms and skull, add them to her inventory and use them as any other item, or even combine them with other items.
- The fast travel system ("Travel to..." menu) which appears later in the game only lists locations you can currently go to. Locations that haven't been visited yet, or ones that can't be travelled to by the current character, are not listed.

Hints
Part 1: Willowbrook Cemetery

Getting help for Rosalinda
Hint 1: Remember you can detach your body parts (click on the "View attached parts" button).
Hint 2: Examine your surroundings to find a way out of the coffin.
Hint 3: Look around the cemetery for Piecrust - he shouldn't be far away.
Solution Examine and push out the knot. Detach Rosalinda's right arm, switch to it and crawl out of the coffin. Leave the chapel, then crawl into the thicket of brambles. Scare the blackbird away to have Piecrust join you.

Freeing Rosalinda from the coffin
Hint 1: Sometimes, multiple characters (or body parts) will need to work together to accomplish a task.
Hint 2: Piecrust can cast spells now! Use the "Item & Spells" button to access them.
Solution Cast Piecrust's Rust spell on the coffin. Reattach Rosalinda's arm. Once she has both arms and the nails are rusted, she can push off the lid.

Confronting the Light's Chosen
Hint 1: Piecrust's magic will prove useful again!
Solution Cast the Rust spell on the captain's longsword.

Part 2: Citadel of the Light's Chosen

Waiting for the trial
Solution There's not much Rosalinda can do right now... Talk to Osmund. Once Rosalinda has asked about what's going to happen next, you can end the conversation and select to wait for the trial.

Leaving the Evidence Room as Piecrust
Hint 1: Use your magic. Examine and collect everything in the room. Sometimes examining objects opens up new locations to travel to.
Hint 2: You can use objects from Piecrust's inventory by selecting them, then clicking on an object in the room.
Hint 3: Dealing with the cat: Piecrust's magic won't help you here. Try to find an item that will distract the cat.
Hint 4: The hungry mouse: You may be able to "trade" with the mouse for the marble!
Solution Cast Rust on the wire cage to break free. Get the corn from the cage. Try to leave the room - you'll discover the cat waiting outside, ready to eat Piecrust! Examine the chests and filing cabinets to find an entrance to a mouse hole. In the mouse hole, use the corn on the mouse or the marble. Go back to the Evidence Room, pick up the marble from the floor and use it on the cat to distract it.

Getting Tekla to help
Hint 1: You'll need to make sure no one can see Piecrust talking with Tekla. Deal with the problem in the kitchen to make her step away from the other people.
Hint 2: If you can't deal with the problem, you may be missing something that can be found in the Evidence Room.
Solution Make sure you've examined the papers in the Evidence Room, which will teach the Flame Arrow spell to Piecrust. Use the Flame Arrow on the firewood. You'll then be able to talk to Tekla. Go through both dialogue options to convince her Rosalinda is in danger.

Opening the courtroom door
Hint 1: You'll need to complete certain steps with both characters to do that. If you can't open the door, switch to the other character to see if you can progress with them.
Hint 2: Rosalinda won't be able to get rid of the guards by the door by herself.
Hint 3: Rosalinda needs to open the door, but she can't leave the dock, and the guards won't let her detach her arms. Find a way to "free" one of her arms.
Solution As Rosalinda, talk to Lydia and select the "This is a travesty of justice" dialogue option, which will cause one of the guards to hit Rosalinda, dislocating her arm. Switch to the arm and steal the key from the clerk. You'll now be able to use the key on the door, but only after Piecrust has convinced Tekla to help Rosalinda, and the ogress as started banging on the door, scaring away the Chosen guarding it.

Escaping from the courtroom
Hint 1: Rosalinda is being attacked and can't do much at the moment. Try to create a distraction with Piecrust to help her escape.
Solution Cast the Flame Arrow spell on the pile of papers.

Part 3: The Coach chase

Chased by the Chosen - defeating Leon
Hint 1: There are several ways of defeating Leon, depending on the active character and items available. Each of the following hints concerns a different solution.
Hint 2: With certain characters, you may be able to get to an unusual location from the roof of the coach.
Hint 3: You can cast spells on items dropped on the ground (or the roof of the coach, in this case).
Hint 4: If you can't reach your target - remember you can pick up Rosalinda's body parts and combine them with other items in the inventory.
Solutions:
1: As one of Rosalinda's arms, you can examine Bella the coach mare, then get on her back and unbuckle the girth of Leon's saddle (provided that the arm is not holding anything).
2: As Piecrust, you can examine Bella the coach mare, then get on her back and cast the Rust spell on the buckle of Leon's saddle.
3: Talking to Norbert gives Rosalinda the club. Rosalinda can't reach Leon with the club to attack him. Extend her reach by combining the club with one of her arms. Use the newly created item on Leon. You'll have to "duel" him and select the correct moves to unsaddle the knight. If you lose the club, don't worry - two other solutions for dealing with Leon are still available.
4: You can drop the club received from Norbert onto the roof of the coach. Piecrust can then cast a Flame Arrow spell on it, creating a fiery club. Rosalinda can then use the fiery club to fight Leon off - but she won't be able to reach the knight easily. Combine the fiery club with one of Rosalinda's arms to give her extended reach, then use the new item on Leon to scare his horse and unsaddle the knight.

Chased by the Chosen - slowing down the pursuers
Hint 1: Something has changed in the coach's surroundings after Leon has been defeated. This may help you slow down the remaining Chosen.
Hint 2: Make sure you've examined the objects inside the carriage.
Hint 3: You have to use Piecrust's magic, but not to directly attack the pursuers.
Solution As Piecrust, examine Albert's book inside the coach to learn two new spells. Climb through the hatch and use the Water Jet spell on the dirt road to make mud the pursuers will get stuck in.

Part 4: Archwood

Putting Rosalinda back together
Hint 1: There's a useful item near the location Rosalinda ends up after the crash. To be able to use it, you'll have to distract the bandits.
Hint 2: Remember you can control the skull even while it's stuck on the spike.
Hint 3: The dialogue between the bandits provides some hints on what to do.
Solution Get inside the tree stump in the Overgrown Ravine with one of the arms and take the dream moss. In the Small Clearing, switch to the skull and grin at Pest to distract him. Use the dream moss on Pest's mug to put him to sleep. As the skull, you can now talk to Crag and pretend to be Pest. Suggest the exact opposite of what you want to achieve (= NOT going back to Greywall and NOT freeing the prisoner) to make the bandits leave. Now Rosalinda can reattach her skull!

Finding Piecrust
Hint 1: Piecrust is nearby, but you'll need to convince him to come out of hiding.
Hint 2: Convincing Piecrust Rosalinda is a friend shouldn't be complicated, but you'll need a certain ability to do that.
Hint 3: Only a certain part of Rosalinda's body has that ability.
Solution Explore the Archwood until you reach the Hollow Willow. Piecrust is inside and you'll be able to convince him to join you by simply talking to him - for that, you'll have to recover Rosalinda's skull first.

Helping Osmund
Hint 1: The items you need to help Osmund are all close by.
Hint 2: Search near the crashed coach.
Hint 3: You will need to weaken the bracket before you can take the lantern.
Hint 4: You must rescue Piecrust before you'll be able to help Osmund.
Solution Examine the thick undergrowth near the crashed coach to find the sword. Use the sword on bound Osmund to free him. Now the novice needs a weapon and a light source. For the weapon, use the sword on him again to hand it over. For the light source, cast Piecrust's Rust spell on the iron bracket of the coach, then take the lantern with Rosalinda and give it to Osmund.

Dealing with the guards in the Ruined Courtyard
Hint 1: Attempting to approach the guards or cross the courtyard as Rosalinda will trigger a scene in which Rosalinda is chased away. The scene also has some hints on how to outsmart the guards.
Hint 2: The bright fire makes it easy for the guards to recognise an intruder.
Hint 3: You could trick the guards into thinking you're Crag and Pest, but you'd need two people for that.
Solution Use Piecrust's Water Jet spell on the campfire to extinguish it. Then, once you've helped Osmund and visited the courtyard, you can tell Osmund to go there and help you trick the guards. With the fire extinguished, Rosalinda can tell Osmund in the courtyard to approach the guards together, pretending they're Crag and Pest. This will cause the guards to leave.

Helping Norbert
Hint 1: You can find Norbert near the Standing Stones, but you won't be able to help him until you find someone close to him, whose voice will wake him up from the nightmare.
Note on the Archwood section of the game: There's an item at the bottom of the lake you can get at this stage, but which is not required until later. Getting that item is covered in the next section of the walkthrough.

Part 5: The ruins

Getting into the Columned Hall
Hint 1: You'll need a bit of strength to open the tall gate at the bottom of the pit.
Solution Once the guards are gone from the courtyard, Rosalinda can get to the bottom of the pit and push the gate open.

Lowering the drawbridge
Hint 1: You'll need something to reach the lever from the far side of the chasm. There is an item obtainable in the forest that could help.
Hint 2: To get the item, you'll have to help the person currently holding it.
Hint 3: Norbert is in the forest, under the effect of an illusion. Hearing the voice of someone he knows well could wake him up.
Hint 4: Once you have Norbert's whip, you can attempt to use it on the lever, but Rosalinda's aim is not good enough. Try to modify the whip to make it grab the lever more easily.
Solution After you've seen Norbert by the Standing Stones, talk to Albert in the Columned Hall and send him to his brother. A scene will play by the Stones. Norbert will go back to normal and he'll leave his whip on the ground. Pick it up. Combine the whip with one of Rosalinda's arms and use the new item on the drawbridge lever.

Getting past the magic eye
Hint 1: The eye only reacts to living things, so Rosalinda (and her body parts) can approach it without triggering the alarm.
Hint 2: Touching the eye is impossible because of its magical protection. Find something to blind it with.
Hint 3: Find a way to get that item onto the ledge, and THEN use it on the eye.
Hint 4: You can send an arm after the item.
Solution Get the empty mug left by Pest in the Small Clearing. Use the mug on the magic eye or the ledge to throw it there. It will miss the eye, however. Then, use one of Rosalinda's eyes on the eye or the ledge to throw it as well. The arm will be able to pick up the mug in the new location and use it on the eye, covering it.

Dealing with the guards at the dig site
Hint 1: Piecrust can slip past the guards unnoticed and talk to Tekla for some hints.
Hint 2: You'll need a new ally to deal with the guards - but first, you'll have to help that person.
Hint 3: The bandits only listen to Siegfried, but he is trapped in one of Aurelia's illusions. Examine his surroundings and try talking to him to get clues on how to help him.
Hint 4: You'll need Rosalinda to solve the puzzle. Find an item to unlock the door for her.
Hint 5: Siegfried is suffering from terrible stage fright. Do something to convince him he doesn't have to fear his "audience".
Hint 6: Try to pretend you're the audience enjoying the show. You'll need certain body parts to do that.
Solution Get into the Dig Site with Piecrust. After the scene with Aurelia and Siegfried, examine Siegfried and take the pentagonal gem from him. Use it to open the stone door in the Descending Tunnel for Rosalinda. In the Side Room, examine the chest and listen to Siegfried to learn about his stage fright. Then, clap for him. You'll need either Rosalinda with both arms attached, or both arms in the room to do that. Once the actor has awoken from the nightmare, you can talk to him and ask him to dismiss the guards at the Dig Site.

Getting to the lower ruins
Hint 1: Tekla can open the way, but you must be prepared.
Solution After dealing with the guards at the Dig Site, talk to Tekla with Rosalinda while Rosalinda has all of her body parts attached and ask Tekla to open the passage.

Opening the secret passage beyond the Low Tunnels
Hint 1: You'll need to clear the roots from the lever to open the secret exit in the passage.
Hint 2: Piecrust knows a spell that can help, but he can't just go through the tunnel.
Hint 3: One of Piecrust's spells can be used outside of water, too.
Solution Use Piecrust's Air Bubble spell so that he can safely get through the tunnel with the poisonous air. Then, use the Flame Arrow spell on the stone plate. Finally, operate the level as Rosalinda. The secret passage lets you get back to Archwood in case you missed some items there.

Helping Lydia
Hint 1: Getting through the dirt wall in the low tunnels can lead you to a new location. There is a tool somewhere that will let you clear the wall.
Hint 2: Once you've found Lydia, you'll need to wake her up. One of Piecrust's spells can help.
Solution Use the shovel (found in the Stables near the Ruined Courtyard) to dig through the dirt. Then cast Water Jet on Lydia.

Defeating the armour construct
Hint 1: Despite the construct's power, defeating it is not that complicated. Look around the room and pay attention to descriptions.
Hint 2: The construct's weak spot is its skull.
Hint 3: The solution requires a type of action you've performed many times in the game, but never before to solve a puzzle.
Solution: While chased by the construct, try to leave the Chamber of Trials to go into the Low Tunnels. The construct will follow and smash its skull, as it's too tall to enter the tunnel.
Note: There is another way of defeating the construct, which was added at a suggestion from one of the testers. It's significantly more complicated and requires some backtracking, and is not covered here. If you found it - congratulations!

Opening the shimmering barrier
Hint 1: Read the inscription on the wall and try to get on the pressure plates with different characters to get some clues.
Hint 2: There is something Rosalinda can use to "gain some weight" in the Chamber of Trials. Think about how that thing used to be earlier.
Hint 3: You can replace the construct's skull, but you'll still need to wake it up.
Hint 4: An Archwall spell could animate the Archwall construct.
Hint 5: The plates detect both weight and magic. Maybe two people can activate one of them?
Solution You'll need to press and activate with magic both plates at the same time. For one plate, Piecrust and Lydia have to stand on it together. For the other, attach Rosalinda's skull to the remains of the armoured construct. Then cast the Activate Mechanism spell on it (Piecrust can learn it from a parchment found inside the elephant statue in the courtyard). Now you can control the construct and make it step on the other pressure plate.

Disabling the magic barrier in the library
Hint 1: Examine the books and the contraption in the library for some hints.
Hint 2: You'll need the ancient anti-magic crystal to disable the spells in the library and weaken Aurelia. If you haven't found it yet, the hints on its location are in the library.
Hint 3: You'll also need a spell to open the magic cage.
Hint 4: If the cage is still protected, read on how to disable the protection.
Solution Read the book on magic amplifiers and dampeners, including the "Safety precautions" section, then use the black crystal (see "Finding the black crystal" below): first, use the Activate Mechanism spell on the golden cage (Piecrust can learn it from a parchment found inside the elephant statue in the courtyard). Then, have Rosalinda use the black crystal on the golden cage. Rosalinda must have all of her body parts attached, and Piecrust has to be in the room with her.

Finding the black crystal
Hint 1: The crystal used to be located near a prison, in a valley on the outskirts of the city.
Hint 2: You'll need to get to the bottom of the lake to get the crystal.
Hint 3: Piecrust can't dive into the lake without a spell that will let him breathe underwater.
Hint 4: The ancient magic cage can be opened with an equally ancient spell.
Hint 5: You can use elemental powers in an unusual way to save Piecrust from the threat.
Solution Use Piecrust's Air Bubble spell and dive into the lake. Then, use the Activate Mechanism spell on the golden cage (Piecrust can learn it from a parchment found inside the elephant statue in the courtyard). Once Piecrust is chased by the catfish, he can cast the Flame Arrow on it to burn it with hot water and escape.

Dealing with the catfish
Hint 1: You may have found an item that will help you recover the black crystal from the fish's belly, but you'll need something else to administer it to the fish.
Hint 2: Find something the catfish would find appetising.
Hint 3: The first item is in the Ruined Courtyard.
Hint 4: Search the Storage Room at the bottom of the pit with Piecrust to locate the other item.
Hint 5: The other item is in the Ruined Courtyard.
Hint 6: Rosalinda can't dive down into the lake without some additional ballast.
Solution Take the bitter tincture from the carriage in the courtyard. Discover the barrel of herrings in the Storage Room with Piecrust. You'll then be able to remove the planks with Rosalinda and get a smoked herring. Combine the herring with the tincture and use the bitter herring on the catfish to make it spit out everything it swallowed. The black crystal will, unfortunately, sink to the bottom of the lake. Pick up a stone from the pile by the lakeside with Rosalinda, dive into the lake and pick up the "glinting object" - the crystal.

The Chamber of Trials fight
Hint 1: You'll have to both help Lydia and distract Aurelia.
Hint 2: If you don't have a weapon, look for one in the Chamber.
Hint 3: Spells can be countered with spells!
Solution Use either the shovel or Figg's cane (which you can simply take from Figg) on the bodyguard to knock her out and save Lydia. With Piecrust, use either Flame Arrow or Water Jet on Aurelia to counter her spell.

The demon
Hint 1: You have exactly what you need to deal with the demon...
Hint 2: ...from the very start of the game!
Solution Cast Piecrust's Banish Demon spell on the demon.

Defeating Aurelia
Hint 1: To complete the earlier plan, you'll have to distract Aurelia and search for the black crystal.
Hint 2: Try to hurt Aurelia's pride.
Solution Talk to Aurelia and select the "You'll never be able to mind-control me!" option. With the sorceress distracted, examine the items on the floor with Rosalinda. Find the black crystal and use it on the golden cage to defeat Aurelia.

Final steps
Hint 1: Theodore remembers more spells now. One of them is the exact thing you need.
Solution Cast Restore Form on Theodore himself.
